Hostal Menorca's Most Unusual Tourist Attraction

The Pedreres de S'Hostal

Quarrying ended in 1994 and since then Lithica, a cultural association, have set about restoring the sand stone quarries with the support of the Consell de Menorca.

Gradually it has been turned into a heritage park. Today it has been landscaped incorporating the stone cutters tradition of cultivating orchards and vegetable gardens in disused quarries.

There is an arboretum showcasing native Minorcan flora, a quarry for fruit trees and another for bushes and shrubs. There is another containing cultivated Olive trees. Aromatic plants are featured in another area and close by you will find a pond containing Menorcan fresh water plants.

Visitors are able to see manual quarry methods, which are over 200 years old, and the mechanical methods usedfrom the middle of the 20th century.

The development of this site now brings together an outdoor history museum, a sculpture park and amaze with a concert auditorium 30 meters down at the base of its sheer white walls. Thus a derelict industrial site has been transformed intoa most unusual tourist attraction.
